How a pickaxe slot works: one round from spin to chest
You press spin and the 5x3 reels collect pickaxes. The tools then fall, each into its own column, and start chipping the blocks below. Dirt pays nothing. Stone returns 0.10x. Below that sit ore at 1x, gold at 3x, diamond at 5x and obsidian at 25x. Toughness climbs with price: dirt goes in one hit, obsidian holds seven.
A locked chest sits under every column. Clear the column completely and the chest opens, multiplying the whole round rather than that column alone. Open two or three in the same round and those multipliers multiply each other. That is where the clips people share come from.
Three scatters start the bonus. In Mine Drop, Mine Drop 2 and Mine Slot it runs 4 free spins, and the count matters less than the rule behind it: the mine does not reset between spins. Whatever you failed to finish on the first spin is still standing on the second.

Mine Drop from Paperclip Gaming came first, on 8 September 2025. The studio works only with Stake and builds on its Stake Engine, so the first game of the format was tied to a single casino from birth.

That table is identical in Mine Drop and Mine Slot down to the last figure. So are the 4 free spins, the Extra Chance price of 3x the bet and the bonus buy at 100x. Three things differ: a 5x6 mine against 5x7, a fourth pickaxe at 5 hits against 4, and the artwork. Mine Drop shows sky, clouds and a mine. Mine Slot added mountains, trees, floating mobs and a chicken walking along the grass beside the field.
The lines then split. Mine Slot 2 touched only the entry to the bonus in March 2026: instead of a fixed 4 spins there is a scratch card of nine cells, and it decides whether you get 3, 4 or 5. Mine Drop 2 rebuilt everything in July 2026, with two new block types, a fifth pickaxe tier, three bonus levels by scatter count, seven buy options and a ceiling of 50,000x instead of 5,000x.
Then a third studio walked into the format in June 2026 and turned it into a different genre. Falling Pickaxe by Pixmove is filed as an instant game rather than a slot: one reel, one pickaxe, a vertical shaft and no chests at all. The pickaxe falls on its own and breaks blocks until its durability runs out, from 100 hits on the wooden one to 400 on the diamond. The ceiling is 160x, thirty times below Mine Drop.
Why the format caught on
An ordinary slot shows no process: the reels spin and stop. Here there is something to watch between the press and the result. Pickaxes fall, layers disappear, and you can see whether you reached the chest or stalled two blocks short. Add a vocabulary nobody needs explained: pickaxe, dirt, obsidian, chest.
